TODAY WAS AWESOME. TODAY, I had the highlight of my LIFE!! just read my facebook status.
What I wore today
1. Tokio Hotel singlet dress
Trying something new
Cans full of fizzy jelly
Beware thirsty people - this is not a drink
It was the day of the Die Antwoord gig at the Prince Bandroom in St. Kilda. The doors open at 8:00 pm with M.A.F.I.A. on the decks til 9:30pm and some cringeworthy amatuer rapper from 9:30 pm to 10:00 pm. M.A.F.I.A. back on for half an hour. And then DIE ANTWOORD on from 10:30 to 11:30 pm
Since the gig was in St. Kilda and it was such a nice night/day, I suggested to vman that we explore and eat on Acland Street. We walked past the Princeband Room at 7:30 pm and saw a massive line outside for Die Antwoord. On the chalkboard outside was the note:
DIE ANTWOORD
SOLD OUT :(
This was gonna be good.
Don Julio suggested we eat at Blue Corn, a Mexican Restaurant on 205 Barkly Street, that served what he called the realest thing to Mexican food. I had a Fish Toastada with black beans, avocado, pine nuts and salsa. It tasted like paper. I didnt finish it. Vman had something that didn't taste like paper. He had a Chicken Enchallada. The food needed more flavour. Vman had a Mexican Mule drink which tasted tropical and quite nice. Pineapple juice, Bundaberg Rum, Dry Gingerale and some other mixtures. Quite strong. Vman didnt finish it. I so would if i wasn't driving.
I liked the atmosphere there. Laid back, I felt I was in someone's backyard progola. Girls are in singlets and skirts. The waiter was wearing slippers. There was a customer without any shoes on. Theres something about St. Kilda that I love. So carefree.
7:30pm
Beautiful St. Kilda during sunset
We got to the Princeband Room about 9:00pm which was okay because it was only DJ. I've never been to the Princeband Room and i was very happy to see it was a small venue.
Small venue =
less people = intimate shows = less security restrictions = easy access to the front
We walked up to the side and to the front, found a neat little spot. Gotta secure our front row stands!
I've never heard Mafia play. I've seen her a couple times at Sneaker Releases and on magazines. I know that she's one of very few female hip hop Dj's in Melbourne - some credit awarded. I found myself bopping and stepping to her beats. Her mix was upbeat. She turned annoying songs into something pleasant to the ear. She mashed two songs that would never sound good together, and made me dance to it. I reckon her gigs will go off.
It was 9:30pm and she announced 'BANG' was going to come on stage for his set. EW. I researched this Bang guy, and utterly CRINGED and SHIVERED and FROWNED and everything else that showed I hated it. Heres a preview.. if you dare.
The first video is an ad for Honda Jazz.
Such much ehspace.. Honda Yazz
And he actually sung the last song to go out with a 'Bang' LOLS. Someone commented:
'This is Australian Hip Hop?'
FUCK NO. This shit is reaching the world and giving Aussie Hip Hop a terrible name. It makes me cringe im not gonna put the song titles out of disrespect for him. He even sung a song about adding him on facebook. Facebook?? Bang and his 'boys' took their shirts off after a couple of songs (bceause they were terribly sweaty). They were getting the crowd to yell out their names to pump up their egos. Bangs 'boy' wanted us to spell out his name: F.A.B. someone from our corner of the room yelled out
G. A. Y!
I see people rubbing their foreheads, looking at their friends with big question mark thinking bubbles, and not applauding their songs. I had my head in my arms. poor Die Antwoord, what will they make of it.
The biggest cheer was when they finally got off stage. 30 minutes of suffering. we all willingly experienced pain to feel the reward of Die Antwoord.
Mafia came on and did her thang. Then it was time for the final act. I was so excited. My heart was beating faster. I was anxious. I was smiling to myself like a dickhead. I had to hold vman's hand. I bobbed up and down and looked at vman in utter happiness. the objects of my obsession where going to be less than a metre away from me. I just wanted to scream already.
The lights dimmed. A low bass fills the room. A projection of their good friend with (the disease which causes premature aging) appears and blinks at the crowd. The crowd is screaming and chanting their names, egging them to come out.
DJ 'i Tech drop the muthafucking beat comes out first. He has a pig mask on so I doubt its him. His arms are far too skinny. Yolandi Visser, what wikipedia described her as singer-rapper sexpot, comes jumping out dressed in a white with trademark Die Antwoord drawings on her. Her face is completely covered. Finally, Ninja comes out. He mainly BURSTS out. They are doing some sort of martial art poses. Jumping and running around the stage. So full of energy. Im so happy.
Die Antwoord in Bunny outfits
My broken camera is still at the repairers so I used my dads crappy camera with AA batteries that I had to change half way thru the show because they ran out! Photo quality is less than expected but at least I have some memories.
Standing in the front row is the best. There is almost no point in being at a gig if your not in the front row. And since there were less seucirty restrictions, I could jump on stage and pull Ninja's pants down. hehe.
Die Antwoord played all but two songs on their SOS album. Even one that I hadnt heard of before, perhaps some of their earlier work. the crowd went off, well I went off, when Evil Boy come on. There was an inflatable Evil Boy carrying a giant penis. I knew all the lyrics to this song. It has 22 plays on my itunes and countless more on my stereo.
Die Antwoord were great to see live. Really engaged with the crowd and so full of energy. Dancing their crazy moves and jumping all over the place. No wonder they're so skinny. Yolandi mostly used the centre of the stage. She would occasionally pull down her pants and expose her ass to the audience, grab her boobs, and pulled down the front of her pants so low that we almost saw her 'SE POUS'. At the end of $copie she bent over and let the audience slap her ass. Whenever she drank water she sprayed the audience with rest inthe bottle, then squirted what ever was in her mouth. hahah poor photographers in the front row with their expensive DSLR's. Imagine saying you're camera was ruined because Yolandi Visser spat water at you! Yolandi's hair was crazy. She was so much smaller than I thought she'd be. Shes actually shorter than me. And her body is as tinny as a 15 year old.
Die Antwoord in rest position
But Ninja was definetly the centre of attention. He kept doing run ups from the back of ths stage and plunging himself into the crowds giving the security guys hell! I lost count after three. It looked like he really enjoyed it. The crowd was pulling his pants down because when he got on stage he pulled them back up.
Bad photo of the 100th time Ninja jumped
into the crowd and pissed off the bouncers
Serenading the guys
Despite only jumping into one part of the crowd, (the most noisest), Ninja used all of the stage. At one point he was wanking in the corner, or at least pretending to wank. He threw his towel into the crowd after wiping his ass with it. He would bend over and sing directly into peoples eyes. He was touching fans and pointing the mic at them so they could sing a bit of the chorus. It really really made my day when Ninja saw me filming him, went up to me, pointed the mic to my mouth and looked me into the eye. The song was Wat Kyk Jy and it was the chorus. For a moment I lost the write worlds but in a split second I yelled
FUCK JOU!
into the mic and it was FUCKING AWESOME. his small act of kindness and trust in me made me feel humble. ME?? MUA?? oh my gosh. ME?!??!
I'VE GOT THIS ALL ON CAMERA
Now im on the official website looking to see if i got the write lyrics. haha. I'm smiling like a dickhead when i replay this moment in my head. Vivid memories. Vivid memories.
Me with Evil Boy
The following pictures I took off the inthemix.com website. A happy snapper told me our photo would be on this website. Awesome.
