Malakas

I'm looking up ideas for tattoo. I wanted a chinese character for 'strength' but realised that a lot girls out there have it.. usually on the back of their necks. This didn't really phase me because the symbol means something to me (ever since high school) so the reasons to get it tattooed on me would be legitamate. Although it is disheartening to know that I will be branded the same way as others. I dont want to be like the others. I want something that is unique.

I'm thinking to get the word 'strength' in another language, how about Tagalog?

Astig or Matigas... mean hard or strong but it gives too much of a masculine feel to it. I'd probably need to go for Malakas.

Every culture has proverbs and they give a massive hint as to how those people live their lives. Obviously surroundings effect behaviour, e.g. money, personalities, nature, resources, government and people will do what they think is right or what they need to do to survive. Respect.

Filippino Proverbs

Children who get everything they ask for seldom succeed in life

Don't empty the water jar until the rain falls

He who speaks too much works too little

If you buy things you don't need, you will soon be selling things you do need

If you need to go a long way, go slowly

Stones hurdled to the sky. Dont be angry if you get hit.

The noisest drum has nothing but air inside

Where the blanket is short, learn to bend

Man promises while in need

To a person without fear, there is no such thing as a high fence

If you wear something borrowed, you can be stripped in the streets

Reading through 99 proverbs, this is what I gathered from the filippino way of life:

Be humble. Settle for what you have and be grateful. Don't be greedy. Work hard and be determined. Do a good job. Don't be useless. Balance your life. Don't talk too much, don't gossip. Actions speak louder than words. Don't become expectant or think good times will last forever. Don't borrow, work for your own needs.

One of the national animals of the Philippine is the Monkey-Eating Eagle. Like most eagles, the Philippine Eagle is monogamous. Once paired, a couple remains together for the rest of their lives. How romantic.
